A tribute to a special lady.
     A move ahead for Swiftdog

Concord, North Carolina

Upon rescuing Nathan King Cole, an abused and neglected border collie, Jenni Lough became interested in the rehabilitation of unwanted and often abused border collies in the West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Virginia areas. Although Jenni has rescued other dogs , it was not until 1999 that the Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue Organization was founded.

Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue assumes the responsibility of caring for, providing medical care, rehabilitating, and training unwanted or owner surrendered border collies. Many of the dogs within the organization have been abused, mishandled or placed in the wrong environment and have behavior problems, health concerns and are in desperate need of mental stimulation, training, and a proper structure in their lives.

Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue is dedicated to reconditioning these wayward dogs with the end goal of placing them in a stable environment, which harbors positive behaviors from the border collies. Many times, a dog will remain in the kennel for months, until the right environment is found. In rare and unfortunate circumstances, a border collie, which enters our organization is unable to succeed, even with strict management and structure. In this case, and only in this case, the Border collie is humanely euthanized.

Each border collie, which enters our program receives the following basic care, plus any additional care needed.

  • A thorough evaluation of temperament, an initial overview, and an extended evaluation are common before the dog can be posted for adoption.
  • Many times, a rehabilitation process takes place ranging from a minimum of two weeks or until the proper environment is located.
  • Like children, border collies need foundational building blocks to give them success and a sense of well being. Our rehabilitation process instills this within each dog, but occurs in different ways depending on the specific needs of the dog and the dog's background.
  • Each dog receives a health overview. This includes, a rabies vaccine, dhlppc shot, bordatella shot, heartworm check, heartworm preventative (monthly), spayed or neutered, flea and tick prevention, intestinal parasite check and professional grooming on a routine basis.
  • Each dog is trained in a number of obedience commands and behaviors. Each dog is crate trained, and house broken as we require the dogs to be members of the family household and positive, productive members of society. We teach a mutual respect between canine and human, which tends to be the source of problems many dog owners face with pet ownership.
  • During training and rehabilitation, each dog is given adequate shelter, food, water, and mental stimulation. Typically, this organization has anywhere from 4-6 border collies in rehabilitation status at any given time, and there are three permanent border collies here at the residence.
    • Penni, a 10- year-old female is a retired agility competitor.
    • Nate is an 11-year-old male is a certified Therapy Dog and Canine Good Citizen as well as a Therapy Dog International Active(TDIA) titleholder.
    • Stormmi is a one-year-old female who is a certified Therapy Dog, Canine Good Citizen and is in training for tracking as well as agility.

These three dogs are the basis of our goals and the inspiration to continue this community service venture.

Today, Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue is well-respected and has four to six border collies in rehab status. Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue has adopted successful dogs to approved families in West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, and Pennsylvania.

Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue currently networks and volunteers with other rescue groups such as:

  • Southwest Pennsylvania Retriever Rescue Organization (SPARRO).
  • Golden Retriever Rescue of Charlotte (GRRCC).
  • Appalachian Mountain Border Collie Rescue (AMBCR)
  • Florida State Border Collie Rescue.

The organization also networks with

  • Carolina Border Collie Rescue
  • Midwest Border Collie Rescue
  • Blue Ridge Border Collie Rescue
  • Cabarrus C.A.R.E.S.
  • and other locally based independent rescue groups whenever called upon.

Swiftdogz Border Collie Rescue believes that quality over rides quantity. We advocate responsible pet ownership and believe that education is key to providing wayward canines a strong and successful life. We believe that canines can be therapists, teachers, motivators, and friends and the love of the breed carries us to the goal of rescuing, rehabilitating, and training unwanted border collies.
